History

The Shard also known as “Shard of Glass” is a 95 storey tower standing at 309.6 metres (1,016 ft ) high  being the tallest building in the European Union, the second tallest in Europe.

It consists of Level 1 Lobby, 2-28 storey office space, 31-33 Restaurants, 34-52 Shangri-la Hotel, 52 SPA, 53-65 Residential Apartments, 68-72 Observatory and 73-95 the Spire.  which opened to the public in February 2013.

It was designed by Italian Architect Renzo Piano who was asked to meet with Irvine Sellar a entrepreneur who wanted to redevelop Southwark tower. The idea came over lunch when Renzo  sketch on a piece of paper something like a ice berg emerging from the Thames with  Irvine saying it reminded him like mast of sailing ships in a painting by Canalett , and so it began.
